Chapter Seventeen

“No, it's absolutely fine,” Father Rashford said as he sat at the desk in his study, with his mobile phone resting in front of him. “We can reschedule the bric-a-brac sale. Pushing it back a week won't really make much difference, will it?”

“You'd be surprised how much fuss some people make,” Malcolm Waters said over the line. “If you change the routine in any way at all, they come out of the woodwork waving their handbags and insisting that we're breaking ancient traditions.”

“Village life will survive a one week postponement of the bric-a-brac sale,” Father Rashford insisted, unable to stifle a slight smile. “If anyone has any complaints, feel free to direct them to me and I'll explain the situation. We need to make as much money as possible for the church's repairs. The leak in the roof is getting worse and those damaged stones on the floor are becoming a real hazard.”

“Yes, I noticed that as well,” Malcolm mused. “That floor was only fixed a few decades ago. Back in the 1950s, I think. It shouldn't be causing trouble again so soon.”

“These things are sent to test us,” Father Rashford pointed out, glancing at the window and seeing the church about a hundred feet away across the cemetery. “One must always remember to -”

Before he was able to finish, he spotted a hint of movement in a window at the rear of the building. This particular window looked into the small office that had been built many years after the rest of the church, but he'd personally locked the place up about one hour earlier and he knew that there absolutely shouldn't be anybody in there at all.

“Father Rashford?” Malcolm said after a few more seconds had passed. “Were you about to say something?”

“Let's proceed as you see fit,” he replied. “I'm sorry, Malcolm, something has come up. I hope you don't mind if we end this call a little prematurely. It's just that I think I need to go and attend to another matter.”

Once the call was over, he made his way to the window and looked out once more at the church. His heart was racing and although he was trying to convince himself that there was no need to worry, he felt absolutely sure that he'd seen a distinct shape briefly moving inside the church's office. He told himself that there was no reason to believe that a ghostly presence had returned, yet this only led to more worry as he realized that perhaps some vandal might have broken into the building. Whichever way he looked at the situation, he knew that he had a duty to go and take a look, so finally he checked in his pocket to make sure that he still had the key.

“I'm sure it's nothing,” he said under his breath, in an attempt to calm his raging nerves. “I'm sure it's just... a trick of the light.”
